Tungsten trioxide (chemical formula: WO3) is an oxide of tungsten (VI) and an important intermediate in the industry of producing elemental tungsten from tungsten ore. The smelting process involves two steps: the first step is to treat tungsten ore with alkali to obtain WO3, and then reduce tungsten trioxide with carbon or hydrogen to obtain metal tungsten: WO3+3H2 → W+3H2O2WO3+3C → 2W+3CO2
